Statement

Curatorial statement

lona Németh (1963, Dunajská Streda) is a multimedia visual artist, activist, curator, and professor whose activities resonate far beyond the borders of her native country. She studied typography and typographic art at the Hungarian College of Applied Artsin Budapest, graduating in 1986. She co-founded the Erté STUDIO in Nové Zámky where multimedia art festivals took place in 1987–1997. Her 1990s oeuvre is characterized by objects and spatial installations reflecting female experience seen through feminist lens. A prominent part of her works is taken up by realizations in the public space. Her artistic practice is based on a search for balance between personal experience of the life in a country hit by hard political times and the universal history of the Eastern Bloc countries from the year 1990 until the present. She was the head of the IN Studio, and,in 2014 –2019 also of the Open Studio educational program at the Intermedia Department of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. She is currently working on the international exhibition and research project Eastern Sugar, supported by the Creative Europe program and based on the eponymous solo exhibition that took place in Bratislava’s Kunsthalle in 2018. She won the Oskár Čepan Award in 1998 back when it was still known as the Young Slovak Visual Artist of the Year. She presented her work at the exhibition in Medium Gallery, together with the other finalists’ Marek Kvetan, Dorota Sadovská and Emöke Vargová.
