Statement

Viktorie Langer artist statement march 2021

Please do not take these paragraphs as a dogma. At this moment I feel it as written bellow but that can change in the flight of time.

• I create paintings and objects from various materials.

• I don’t want to let me be tied with still repeated genres and notions such as landscape, figure, abstract, realistic; I want my creation be all-encompassing and all-embracing.

• Forms of shapes come to me from nature and universe.

• Color brings endless amount of possibilities in experimentation, each hue of color or their combination evokes different emotion or meaning, and these combinations can be ∞.

• Painting or object is like poem or musical composition, you can scan it by your gaze and enjoy that delicious moment.

• Painting or object is basically an energetic radiant which increases the vibrational field around itself.

• I am interested in mysticism, non-dogmatic spiritual philosophy, hermeticism, original gnosis, quantum physics. I am currently interested in the work and thinking of these personalities: Agnes Pelton, Hilma af Klint, František Drtikol, Philip Guston, Eduard a Míla Tomášovi.

• Meditation. By practicing meditation we stop to think through brain and we imbed in our heart. Instead of thinking and constant thoughts comes love, understanding and compassion. I attempt to paint these non-material phenomena such as harmony, spiritual body, energy and love. I think these are the most important notions at which we should aim out attention right now.

• I source my inspiration from anywhere. I follow great artists from around the globe, but also a landfill or sewer catches my sight. Nothing happens by accident and everything has its meaning.

• Ecological sustainability. Everybody and everything is one whole and by every deed or thought we influence each other. I always create objects from found materials, secondhand or for removal, while painting I don’t waste paint and material. I refuse one-time non-ecological installation solutions such as construction of plasterboard or wooden walls just for one exhibition. I prefer quality before quantity. I don’t paint more than 20 paintings per year, out of which only 5 are large scale.

Curatorial statement

“Viktorie Langer knows how to channel a vast array of sensations, sentiments, and reflections through her painting practice. Rich in particular tones, colour combinations, and compositional twists, one and the same painting can change from sharp, deep, and dark to fresh, funny, or sarcastic (and back) in a matter of few brushstrokes. Langer thereby gives vivid evidence in her art of how some truths of life come in layers of conflicting feelings, and how powerful a key such a keen sense of humor can become, for being truly serious.” (-Jan Verwoert, jury member)
